A clear pathway from assessment to public access
Your journey begins with an Initial Suitability Assessment. We consider your dog’s temperament, health, confidence, motivation and enjoyment, along with the skills and commitment involved for you as their handler.
When training is a suitable next step, personalised lessons help you become your dog’s primary trainer. Sessions may cover everyday reliability, assistance tasks, calm behaviour in public and practical skills that support your individual routine.
Assistance dog training commonly takes one to two years. Progress is individual, and qualification cannot be guaranteed. When the required standards have been reached, you and your dog may be ready to complete an independent Public Access Test.

What does my dog need to learn?
Training may include calm public behaviour, reliable everyday skills and specific tasks that support your individual needs. Your training plan will be shaped by your goals, your dog’s suitability and the standards required for public access.
Can any age, breed or size of dog become an assistance dog?
Suitability is based on the individual dog rather than breed or size alone. Temperament, health, confidence, trainability, enjoyment of the work and the ability to remain settled in public are all considered during the assessment.
How long does training take and how many lessons will we need?
Many dog-and-handler teams train over one to two years, although every journey is different. The number of lessons will depend on your starting point, training goals, practice between sessions and your dog’s individual progress.
What happens after I book an Initial Suitability Assessment?
We’ll confirm your appointment details and explain what to bring. During the 45–50 minute consultation in Kotara, we’ll discuss your goals, observe your dog and provide clear guidance about suitability and possible next steps.
